Dubai Health Authority (DHA) has disclosed that it has conducted discussions with Illumina, a company in genome technologies, as part of strategy to execute its Genome Project, which plans to minimize disease prevention via gene surveying.
The project focuses to utilize scanning to find changes in the chromosomes, genes and proteins that can direct to genetic diseases, permitting researchers to prevent and eradicate chronic diseases and cancer.
It can also decrease the financial burden of treating chronic diseases, additionally to slowing down the ageing process.
Chairman and director general of the DHA, Humaid Al Qutami, received Paul Johns, the director of population genomics at Illumina, which has set up labs around the world, a statement mentioned.
Johns said Illumina is eager on integrating with the authority in the next part of Genome, adding that he believed to start a partnership between the DHA and Genomics England.
The DHA shared the implementation idea of the Genome Project and its believed outcomes, which finally rotate around exterminating chronical and genetic diseases like hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and obesity.
The project’s timetable expands about 24 months, during which samples will be gathered to check DNA sequences, and recording the outcome in the data bank. A second phase incorporates automated learning and artificial intelligence to issue reports that support forecast future disorders, research and epidemics, and plan preventive measures.
Al Qutami stated, “Forming genome laboratories in Dubai signals a new phase, where our forecasts for the future of the health and medical services sector begin to materialise. The labs will establish the first national genetic database for future research, lending support to decision-makers as they set plans and strategies for the future of the health care sector.”
He also mentioned that the DHA is contributing resources to implement Genome, mandating a number of its affiliate organisations to carry out its execution, like the Department of Pathology and Genetics, and the Dubai Cord Blood and Research Centre.
It has also created a committee of genetics experts.
