Facebook’s vice president of Messaging Products, David Marcus, replied to the counterblast against Messenger Kids when he was talking at the Upfront Summit in Los Angeles on Thursday.
Marcus stated, “Families will be better off because it exists.” He also said, “I firmly believe that it is a good product.”
Messenger Kids introduced in December, aiming kids of age between 6 to 12. The app has experienced large criticism for boosting young people to join social media at a very young age, which some mention is a violation of COPPA regulations. But Marcus explained that Facebook’s children’s product does not come under social media in the way that Snapchat does.
The plan is to make it simpler for families to integrate younger siblings into group chats, Marcus stated.
Marcus said, “My daughter uses it on a daily basis now.” He also mentioned, “It has enabled me to be more in touch with her.”
He even claimed that part of the skepticism is because it is getting difficult for Facebook to introduce products with “global enthusiasm,” but that the team is not going to allow that dictate its plans.
Marcus also spoke about how he wants Messenger’s key app to prevent becoming like email. “The last thing I want is to be the guy who recreated email.” He stated that while customers can interact with brands using Messenger, the consumers are the ones starting the communication on his platform.
He was further optimistic that people would increasingly utilize Messenger for peer-to-peer transactions, as an alternative to Venmo or Square Cash. Marcus said, “Payments is really at home in a conversational environment.”
When it a matter of Facebook’s main app, Marcus spoke about restricting cryptocurrency ads because too many of them are scams. Marcus, however, sits on the board of bitcoin platform Coinbase.
