Javier Aguirre to coach Egypt’s national team

The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) has picked Mexican Javier Aguirre to coach the national team under a four-year contract, an association member said on Wednesday.

Aguirre, who previously coached Mexico, Japan and UAE club Al Wahda, has agreed to lead the Pharaohs until 2022, EFA member Majdy Abdul Ghani said.During his coaching career, Aguirre also managed several Spanish clubs including Atletico Madrid and Espanyol.

The new coach is expected to attend an EFA press conference in Cairo on Thursday.Aguirre, 59, will succeed Argentine Hector Cuper, who the EFA chose not to renew his contract after the Pharaohs suffered three consecutive defeats at the World Cup in Russia.

Cuper, who took charge of the Egyptian squad in 2015, led the Pharaohs to the global tournament for the first time in 28 years.

However, the abysmal performances in Russia triggered an outcry in Egypt, bringing the EFA under scathing criticism amid allegations of financial irregularities. The elected EFA board denied accusations and refused calls to step down.
